ExperienceFor starters, I used to be a teacher for three years immediately following completion of my undergraduate degree. I taught mostly middle school mathematics, but also middle school earth science and history as well. Each year I significantly raised standardized test scores of my students to well exceed school improvement score levels. In my final year of teaching, my colleagues conferred upon me the Teacher of the Year Award in 2011.
I participated in a number of after-school activities to further the learning of my students. I taught an after-school tutoring program to at-risk students and also was the faculty sponsor the Student Council. It was my goal to keep the students occupied and engaged in these after-school activities, even though the school day was technically over. Additionally, parents of my former students appreciated the work I did in the classroom so much that after their children completed middle school, they contacted me to be their child's personal tutor once they reached high school.
While I am no longer a teacher, I still miss the school atmosphere and being able to teach to a younger generation. This is the main impetus behind wanting to become a tutor, so that I can continue my passion for education at the individual level. While my current job satisfies some of my personal needs, I am very excited to get back into 'teaching mode' where I can use previously learned skills into an individual tutoring environment.
My teaching experience focused on middle school math, but my academic expertise reaches far beyond that. I am a highly organized individual with very strong writing skills (94th percentile in writing when taking the GRE to attend graduate school). Further, my graduate degree in the sciences prepares me to teach most scientific disciplines. Social studies (history, geography, etc.) is a personal interest of mine, and I consider myself a history buff. Finally, I have experience through taking 8 years of Spanish and studying abroad in Toledo, Spain. All said, I believe I have the ability to teach to almost any subject requested, and will work extremely hard to gain the desired results.
HobbiesI enjoy reading, exercising, leading by example. I believe in balance in one's life, between maintaining your mind and body, as well engaging with other individuals at events that combine them (like trivia!)
When I was in college, I spent three years as a volunteer little league baseball coach in the local community. Part of me believes it was this experience that caused me to pursue a profession in education immediately following graduation. I truly enjoy conveying information in a manageable way so that it can be processed and reproduced by others. For example, breaking down the way to throw a baseball or swing a bat, or even how to use proportions to solve most math problems.
My favorite memories are when students have what teachers call "ah ha" moments, when a student comprehends a concept and has a realization that they are capable of performing a previously impossible task. Nothing brings me more joy than when a student's head pops up and says those words, because then I know that my work has paid off.
