Experience

I love to write. I also love to teach. Since graduating from the University of Chicago in 2011, I have pursued these two passions in parallel careers as a journalist and educator. Now I am bringing them together to offer writing-focused tutoring for high-school and college students in and around Washington, D.C. My first taste of teaching came in 2009, when I worked part-time at a tutoring center in Chicago. I designed and taught a vocabulary-building course to a small group of high-school students—and loved it. In 2011, shortly after graduating from college, I took an intensive month-long CELTA course (the most widely accepted certification for teaching English as a foreign language). I received my certification in October and moved to Moscow, Russia, the following month. From 2011 to 2015, I tutored English as a second language to Russian professionals in Moscow. I specialized in advanced English, both conversational and written, and in tailoring my courses to students' personal and professional interests. Since moving to Washington, D.C., in the fall of 2015, I have transitioned into academic tutoring and test prep for high-school students. Just as before, I take pride in tailoring my courses to the unique learning styles and interests of each student.

Hobbies

In addition to tutoring, I am a freelance journalist. I first began reporting in Moscow, where I covered the Russian economy for a daily newspaper called The Moscow Times. Since moving back to the US, I have transitioned into magazine journalism. I recently completed a fellowship at the investigative magazine Mother Jones, after which I decided to go freelance so as to pursue in-depth investigative projects. You can see my work on my website: www.delphinedamora.com My interests are broad but tend to center around social inequality, economic policy, mental health, and the history of ideas. I love literature, philosophy, music, and travel.
