Experience

I have tutored students of all ages and skill levels, middle and upper. I received an A in French Conversation while at Amherst College. I received a 5 in AP French at the end of 12th grade at Germantown Friends School. I have taught English and Social Studies and grammar for 5-12th graders with an emphasis on "learning by doing," using primary sources, debates, reenactments, simulations, and role play (to name a few). Have always collaborated with parents and colleagues to enrich the lives of the students. WHY AM I GOOD ROLE MODEL? I am a people-person, empathetic, clear-thinking, calm, and believe that a life without service is a life not worth having. I believe that being a good tutor means being empathetic but also firm enough so that we get fast results. So I am sort of strict but also fun. I have found that if we can have a warm and safe environment when we are learning and being tutored, the results are always better. I was taught at my time at the University of Pennsylvania that things go better when we stick to our goals, create tight, tailored lesson plans, but also allow the occasional teachable detour. In order to fulfill our goals in life, sometimes we have to push ourselves, even if it hurts a little. But the pain is worth it and I always find a way to make it enjoyable too! While at the University of the Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, I took many courses that focused on the latest and most effective tutoring techniques. As long as I put the student at the center of things, catering to his or her needs or strengths, the sessions and results turn out really well. I believe in making the classroom as fun as possible, because I have found that that always opens the door to more interest in and proficiency in learning subject matter, both inside and outside of the classroom. I have a good sense of humor taught through my time at the Graduate School of Education at University of Pennsylvania that sticking close to your goals and making a tight knit lesson plan is essential for good teaching and tutoring. I also think I am particularly adept at classroom discipline and dealing with "outside issues."
