Experience

I have been a teaching assistant (TA) for many college level engineering and science courses including introductory engineering, fluid dynamics, biomedical engineering courses, and engineering design courses. As a TA, I regularly lectured in small groups and tutored students one-on-one. During my undergraduate coursework, I regularly tutored high school student's and underclassmen in mathematics and chemistry. Additionally, I taught with the program for talented youth at Vanderbilt for high school and elementary level math and science coursework. It is here I learned best how different students learn and develop thoughts differently. Nothing has been more satisfying than seeing a student grasp a concept which was initially difficult for them! In tutoring, I like to understand first the concept a student is having difficulty with. I find it most beneficial to the student to understand the curriculum as a whole and then apply their knowledge to specific problems, working from easy to difficult. With this knowledge, a student can more easily solve a trick-question that often appears on a test. My experience in teaching and tutoring math has led me to work differently than some other tutors. I feel anyone can be good at math, one just has to know how they work best to understand and solve the problem. For most math problems, there are a number of ways an individual can arrive at the correct answer, yet oftentimes they are only taught one method in the classroom. By knowing multiple ways to solve a difficult problem, a student can not only feel confident in their work, but check their work with a second method!
