Trained in a variety of effective reading programs including: Phono-Graphix 2 Master Therapist certification, LIPS and Visualization and Verbalization, Read Naturally, and Stevenson. I'm also a City of Alexandria employee in the Office of Historic Alexandria.

Experience

Over 20 years of tutoring experience, from Kindergarten to adult. Classroom teaching experience. Experience with students with learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, and intellectual disabilities. Also experienced in English as a Second language. I tutor because I love watching students of all ages learn and grow. And along the way, I learn and grow, too. My students enjoy our sessions, and they succeed! Favorite success story: A fifth grade student, diagnosed with dyslexia, received an award from her classroom teacher for being the student most likely to get caught secretly reading a book in class! As of April 10, 2017, Iā€™m new to University Tutor, so there are not yet any reviews on this site. So I would like to share with you a recent review of my skills by Dr. Laura Solomon, an Educational Psychologist in Washington, DC: "Eleanor is visionary in her approach to teaching children and very capable in terms of the programs she utilizes and changes them as indicated by the child's progress and growth and if the child's needs change. She assesses children on a regular basis so is very data-based in her intervention. I know her to be reliable in keeping her schedule with children and, if a change is needed, works with the family to reschedule. Eleanor makes sure to know the curriculum children are taught in school without sacrificing helping them build their foundational skills. She is expert at behavior management and understands learning disabilities, including dyslexia, and ADHD. As a consultant in special education with my own practice for 34 years, I would feel very fortunate to have Eleanor as part of my team.ā€ Most students come to my home in Alexandria, VA, but when needed, I do travel.

Hobbies

I enjoy reading (especially autobiographies), swimming, boat rides, plays and movies, lunch or dinner with friends. I think dogs are wonderful. I've lived in Virginia, New Mexico, and Wisconsin. The summer after high school I worked in Belgium. I have fond memories of a camping trip in Canada, in an area just opened to the public. It was an extraordinary experience, because the wildlife there had not yet learned to fear humans.
